A Quick Breakdown
Welcome to our Independent Novel Project for Honors American Lit. We read this epic book and are hoping that it will be the next summer reading novel; now, on to the actual presentation.
The novel follows the story of Rick, a bounty hunter who must take down androids to make some much-needed (cough*wanted*cough) cash. As he caries out this task and meets numerous people along the way, he goes from being a cold and uncaring bounty hunter to a truly empathetic and caring person. The secondary main character is John Isidore; he is an abused and slightly mutated human who just wants to find company. He gets in the form of androids before Rick shows up and kills them; then he just decides to move where there are more people.
Obviously, the actual plot is much more than this. However, that is a very brief summary of the two main characters and what goes on in the novel, as a way to ensure that you follow the story-line to some degree. More detailed character descriptions and more plot information are available under "Additional Content" if you wish to know more. However, the additional content is strictly optional and will take a LONG time to go through, so only look if you are interested.
Analysis wise, the story focuses on empathy. Rick's development is a significant show of empathy, as he goes from being a remorseless killer at the start to a true human at the end. Isidore sets the bar for empathy, as he is the most empathetic person seen in the novel (there is a less important character who has around the same empathy level, but I'm trying to keep this brief). As you look at the symbols, you will see that most (if not all) are related to this theme. Of course, more analysis is in the "Additional Content" area (character analysis). Feel free to take a look there.
Anyway, as you enjoy this website, please keep this question in mind:
What does it mean to truly be a human?
(That's the big question of the novel)
