Well, this book may seem awesome, but maybe you're not convinced. You might think that this book doesn't have everything you want in a great book. However, when looking at the book with the 9 criteria in mind, it turns out to be pretty epic.
Clarity: 9
Clarity is pretty self-explanatory. The book is not difficult to grasp, and is possible to read independently. One person should be able to handle it without needing a group, so it'd be ideal for a summer read.
Escape: 10
The book also has a great way of drawing the reader into its world. The vivid details and imagery really create the setting as if the reader is present, and make it both an interesting and fun read.
Reflection of Real Life: 9
The book may not seem to have anything to do with real life. However, everything done in it is theoretically possible, and with the way the human race is going, we may very well have androids and laser guns in the future. It paints a somewhat accurate image of what could come next, and while that's not the most important to some people, it makes the book cooler in the big picture.
Artistry in Details: 9
Honestly, I'm not sure why my group members decided on 9 instead of 10. The book has really awesome details and vivid imagery, and they really help a reader see the world of the book and feel the emotions the novel conveys. It's at least as detailed as some of the other books we've read, and is a pretty cool thing to read.
Internal Consistency: 9
Overall, the book does a pretty good job of staying on topic. Most people dislike books with random and pointless subplots, and this book doesn't really have any. Isidore's timeline may not make much sense for a while, but after some time, it merges with the original plot, and all is good.
Tone: 8
The warlike language contained within the novel, when combined with the rather grim context, really sets up an interesting tone. The tone conveys the way that the novel would sound if the author read it out loud, and it is certainly interesting. Not everyone likes a post-apocalypse tone, but it sure is interesting. Give it a try!
Emotional Impact: 7
It might not be the highest possible number, but the book does leave some lasting emotions. If a reader is analytically enough to understand the meaning behind empathy and can work to see things in the big picture of the novel, then it really does have quite the impact. It can even be considered quite touching; I'll let you decide yourself.
Personal Beliefs: 8
The novel does relate to at least some beliefs. While this may vary from person to person, it does (at the very least, and this is really just an example) support the idea that all life is precious. That's just one example, and if you look closely, you may find more; this is worth your vote!
Significant Insights: 7
The novel doesn't have the most when it comes to insights, but it provides a very deep and interesting look into human nature. That's the main insight that it has, so it gets a 7 for not having much else; however, that one insight is pretty nice, if I do say so myself.
Anyway, the novel has pretty high ratings for everything. It is a great choice for a Summer Reading novel, and we hope that these values help you understand why we think so!
