Well, this is an odd one. Rachael is supposedly a relative of the people who make the androids that Rick has to hunt, but there's a catch; she turns out to be an android too! However, she sheds some interesting development on the way androids work and show their empathy, as well as helping Rick's character development move along.
You see, Rachael is an odd android. She actually gets into a relationship with Rick, showing that she may feel empathy towards humans; however, as it turns out to be a trap later, that theory is sort of out. The real importance when it comes to her empathy level is the ability to emphasize with other androids. In the novel, this was also seen in Roy's reaction to Irmgard's death; the bottom line is that her attempt to defend the other androids (by risking herself, I might add) shows that the androids are almost a separate species. They can empathize with each other, and may only be handicapped when it comes to humans and animals. Her actions also show Rick's development, as he becomes attracted to her and shows an ability to empathize with female androids; of course, it helps that he doesn't murder her once he finds out she tricked him. Way to show some self-control.
