Kipple is a representation of deterioration and is also a figure of the things that appear useless in one’s life. One time in the novel, this was emphasized was when Isidore describes Kipple by saying that it is basically useless objects, comparing it to Junk mail and illustrating that it is something that is hindering to one’s life. In addition, Kipple represents the decay of an entire planet within the novel, revealing the destruction and chaos caused by World War Terminus. Kipple is inevitable, and everyone will encounter at in some point in time. Mercer and Isidore, through their actions, make it clear that Kipple cannot be defeated; however, they point out that it is humanity's job to hold is of, and as such, they must try to keep things running smoothly. An interesting way to think of Rick can be seen in Kipple; did Rick's victory just mean empathy, or did he fight off Kipple as well? I'm leaning towards Kipple as well, but hey; maybe you can do some independent research on that.
