Philip K. Dick lived from 1928 to 1982, and was an important American writer. Most of his work, interestingly, related to politics and social structure; making the connections yet? Another important connection; his work shows that thin border between reality and basically, everything that is fake. Pretty cool!
Note: Establishment of a historical moment was needed. That is in the, "What Makes This Novel American?" section.
He was born in Chicago with a twin, both born premature. His twin passed away, and this influenced much of his work. He encountered his first scientific influence in the magazine Stirring Science Stories. He went to the University of California and studied history, military science, and more. He was a activist, and stayed true to that identity. He even worked to protest the Vietnam War (history!). He sold his first piece of short fiction in 1951, and he got an award in 1963 for The Man in the High Castle. He tried to work in the mainstream literature area, but eventually embraced science-fiction. In 1968, he published the epic book that this website is based on. His personal life had lots of failed marriages. Eventually, he died from a stroke, and was found passed out on the floor of his home.
Notably, his sad life may have influenced his work. His sister's death was an influence, and it is likely that his many divorces related to his work. All his divorces may be the reason that Rick and his wife Iran don't get along. There are probably more, but those are open to interpretation.
I could have been more detailed, but that's all you get for now. It needs to be kept short, and if you really like it, Google is there for a reason :).
