In the novel, the Voigt-Kampff scale is the most important tool of bounty hunters in search of Nexus-6 Androids. It allows bounty hunters to discern human from android by measuring levels of empathy. This scale represents the fine line between humans and androids, no matter how thin it seems to be. This one thing is which can discern a human from a Nexus-6. The scale represents the one thing that is different about androids: empathy level. However, while the machine can detect differences, there was quite a bit of talk about its fallibility. There is a chance that this scale may not work; for example, an empathetically handicapped human could be affected. While the scale shows that there is a line there, it also highlights that the line is becoming thinner by the day, and soon, humans and androids may be indistinguishable. It also goes back to the question of what it means to be human; androids were shown to be able to display some empathy in the novel, so it seems quite possible that they have actually evolved enough to become human. They have transcended the barrier. Next up!
