Okay, evil may be exaggerating, but he is not a good guy.

Well, this is a great person to compare Rick to. Resch is a bounty hunter too; he meets up with Rick and the two of them work together to take out Garland and Luba Luft. However, there is a lot more to him when you look at the big picture.
Anyway, what with Resch being another bounty hunter, we can assume that his personality and Rick's would be pretty similar. In a way, that is correct; they have pretty similar attitudes before Rick starts to develop, and also before the novel gives us a glimpse of Resch's darker side. Anyway, we first start to see a contrast between the two when Garland points a laser gun at them. Rick ducks in cover, but Phil just shoots the guy; we can see that this guy clearly has no empathy or remorse for androids, as he decides to move directly on to Luba Luft after this kill. Anyway, that shows that at the very least, Phil's empathy level is lower than Rick's. Another insight here is when he points out that he calls androids "its", whereas Rick has only done it occasionally to save himself some guilt. The last important empathetic handicap here is when he kills Luba Luft when she says a few things to make him angry; this clearly shows that he has some issues, and shows Rick's development (he kills Luba Luft after Phil shoots her in the stomach because he feels sorry for her and wants to give her mercy). Phil Resch is a perfect model of exactly what an inhuman human is (oxymoron much?). |
